Victor Gordon Abbott: Dover Ambulance Driver Killed by Cross-Channel Shellfire

Victor Gordon Abbott, a civilian ambulance driver from Dover, was killed on 25 October 1940, during wartime duties at age twenty-eight. His death impacted his wife Violet and daughter Pamela, marking a personal tragedy amid broader civilian losses during the conflict. He is commemorated for his service and sacrifice.

Victor Gordon Abbott was a Dover husband, father and civilian ambulance driver who was killed on duty on 25 October 1940, aged twenty-eight. His death at Limekiln Street brought the fighting across the Channel directly into the life of a young family, leaving his wife Violet and their little daughter Pamela to remember a husband and father lost while serving his town. [1]

Early Life and Family

Victor was born in Dover on 22 May 1912, the son of William Sidney Abbott and Sarah Emily Clark. At the census of 19 June 1921, he was nine years old and attending school. His father worked as a dock checker for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway at Dover Marine Station, while his mother managed the household. [1]

Six children were recorded at home in 1921: Sidney William, Ivy Emily Primrose, Frank Earnest George, Victor Gordon, Queenie May and Elsie Rose. Sidney, the eldest, was already working as a buffet boy at the Burlington Hotel. Later family reports also name Victor’s sister Pat, illustrating how newspaper notices can extend the picture supplied by a single census. [1]

The family suffered an earlier bereavement when Sidney William died at Swan Hill Hospital in Australia on 31 December 1932, aged twenty-seven. In subsequent remembrance notices, Victor’s parents and siblings commemorated the two brothers together, linking losses experienced on opposite sides of the world. [1]

Marriage and Fatherhood

On Boxing Day, 26 December 1935, Victor married Violet Lilian Louise Broomfield at Holy Trinity Church, Dover. The Reverend C. M. P. Heath officiated. Violet was the only daughter of Mrs Wyatt and the late T. G. Broomfield, and her brother gave her away. The contemporary wedding report identifies her maiden surname as Broomfield; Wyatt was her mother’s surname at the time. [1]

The Dover Express preserved a colourful account of the occasion. Violet wore ivory satin, with a veil and orange blossom, and carried white carnations and chrysanthemums given by Victor. His sisters Queenie, Elsie and Pat were bridesmaids, alongside Violet’s cousin Joan Croucher; his brother Frank was best man. The reception took place at Victor’s parents’ home. [1]

The wedding gifts evoke the practical beginnings of their married life: an oak dining table from Victor’s parents, bedroom chairs, saucepans, linen and an electric iron. By October 1940 the couple lived at 3 Council House Street and had a daughter, Pamela, affectionately called Pam. Although the report’s family-summary section leaves the children field blank, the funeral and anniversary notices clearly establish her place in the family. [1]

Civil Defence and Ambulance Service

Victor’s wartime service was civilian, not military. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records him among the Civilian War Dead as an “F.A.P. Member”, while the newspaper explicitly states that he was on ambulance-driving duty when killed. His appropriate service context is therefore Dover’s first-aid and ambulance organisation, rather than an Army regiment or battalion. [1]

His funeral demonstrated close connections with the St John Ambulance Brigade and the town’s wider Air Raid Precautions services. St John members carried his coffin, and representatives of its Dover Corps, Town Division, Southern Railway Division and Cadet Division attended. Tributes came from first-aid parties, drivers, a mobile unit and the voluntary and full-time wardens of Z3 Post. The records do not identify his precise ambulance station or establish whether his appointment was paid or voluntary. [1]

Nationally, St John personnel formed an important part of Civil Defence. They trained the public in first aid, staffed treatment posts and drove ambulances. The Museum of the Order of St John describes ambulance work during the Blitz as particularly difficult because blackout conditions and debris made roads hazardous. This provides the wider setting for Victor’s duties without assuming that every aspect of the national organisation applied to his particular post. [2]

Victor was killed while on ambulance-driving duty: a civilian serving his community under fire.

Dover Express, 1 November 1940, transcribed in the family report.

Dover Under Fire

Dover’s position made its emergency services unusually exposed. Only about twenty-two miles separated the town from German-occupied France, and from 1940 to 1944 German long-range guns across the Channel shelled Dover. Its civilian responders faced artillery bombardment as well as the threat of air attack. [3]

The Dover Express report published on 1 November 1940 describes the exchanges preceding Victor’s death. British guns fired at a small German convoy during the afternoon of Friday 25 October. Shortly before 6 p.m., German batteries opened fire on a British convoy passing down the Channel with a destroyer escort, and German aircraft subsequently attacked the ships. [1]

According to the newspaper, further shelling followed, and RAF aircraft attacked the German gun positions, with Cap Gris-Nez the principal target. Once the British convoy had passed out of range, German guns fired into the Dover area. This sequence places Victor’s death within a cross-Channel engagement that moved from attacks on shipping to shellfire against the town. [1]

Circumstances of Death

Victor died at Limekiln Street on 25 October 1940. The local Dover War Memorial Project adds that he was killed in an ambulance. The contemporary newspaper confirms that he was on ambulance-driving duty, but the available evidence does not establish whether he was travelling to an incident, carrying patients or waiting for instructions. [1][4]

He was not the only man killed in the bombardment. The same newspaper account names Arthur Edward Lyus, who died while working, and Victor Ernest Silk and George Henry Decent, who were together elsewhere in the town. Other people were injured. Victor’s death was thus part of a wider civilian tragedy, rather than an isolated accident involving an emergency vehicle. [1]

Burial and Commemoration

Victor’s funeral took place at Charlton Cemetery, Dover, on Wednesday 30 October 1940, with the Reverend J. Embry officiating. The Dover War Memorial Project identifies his grave as ZC 31. Six St John Ambulance Brigade members acted as bearers: E. Hartley, E. Carroll, H. Cotton, A. Button, S. Humphry and A. Bailey. [1][4]

Violet attended alongside relatives, friends and civil-defence colleagues. Victor’s parents could not be present because they had been evacuated owing to illness—another indication of the disruption imposed on family life by the war. The numerous floral tributes show the breadth of the community that mourned him, including neighbours from Ropewalk, Old Folkestone Road, the Signal Station and Aycliffe. [1]

His widow and daughter’s flowers carried the message: “His loving Wife and Baby Pam, to my dearest Husband and darling Daddy.” Officially, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemorates him under Dover Municipal Borough’s Civilian War Dead. That administrative commemoration is distinct from his physical burial at Charlton Cemetery. [1]

“Treasured memories of my dear Daddy, Victor Abbott … Always remembered by his little daughter, Pam.”

Dover Express, 22 October 1943, transcribed in the family report.

Legacy and Descendants

Anniversary notices preserve the family’s grief beyond the immediate funeral. In October 1941, Violet and Pamela remembered a husband and father whom they described as “One of the best the world contained”. His parents wrote, “Only good-night, beloved; not farewell”, while his sisters and brother recalled the suddenness of a death without an opportunity to say goodbye. [1]

Pamela’s remembrance continued in 1943 and again after the war, in October 1945. Her notices give Victor’s biography its most personal continuity: behind the civilian casualty entry was a young daughter growing up without her father. Together, these family tributes, his grave and the local roll of honour preserve the memory of a Dover man whose service ended on the streets of his own town. [1][4]
